Singer 188U (1973): The Class 188U Industrial Straight-Stitch, Reverse Feed Built In
Singer's own class description for the 188U leaves no ambiguity about its purpose: it "produces top quality, single-needle, straight-line lockstitching and back tacking in fabrics ranging from thin muslins to heavy denims and khaki drills." Issued under three closely related model designations — 188U31, 188U33, and 188U35 — this Singer Company factory service manual dates to 1973 and documents an industrial-grade machine built for genuinely demanding, repetitive production work.
Mechanically, the 188U centers on a spring-biased, quick-reversible feed mechanism that lets the operator feed material forward or backward at will — the "back tacking" capability referenced directly in Singer's own class description, essential for reinforcing stitch ends on heavier work. A rotary sewing hook assembly includes a dedicated oiling point to ensure free, smooth rotation, paired with a link take-up mechanism and grease-lubricated gears for quiet, consistent running under sustained production loads. Maximum stitch length runs 5 stitches to the inch, adjustable via a feed regulating dial mounted on the front of the arm. The machine uses a clamp-type needle bar, with a rear-mounted spool pin positioned specifically to simplify threading during setup or thread changes.
Physically, the 188U carries a 15-23/32 inch bed length and 7-inch bed width, with 8-9/16 inches of clearance to the right of the needle — genuinely generous working space for maneuvering bulkier material like denim or heavy drills through the feed path. The factory service manual walks technicians through the full range of precision adjustments the machine needs over its working life: setting the needle bar at correct height and setting the lower needle bar bushing, setting and inspecting check spring height and tension, setting the presser bar height, timing the sewing hook and setting it sidewise in relation to the needle, timing the feed mechanism, setting and centralizing the feed dog in the throat plate slots (both sidewise and lengthwise), and setting thread clearance between the position finger and related components.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, timing adjustments, and diagrams needed to keep a Singer 188U31/188U33/188U35 running the way it was built to.
