Bennetts' own buyer's guide draws a clear line in the sand: the Electra X models are widely viewed as "the last of what many view as 'true' Enfield bikes" — powered by the authentic pre-unit construction motor (gearbox and engine as separate castings) tracing its roots directly back to when Royal Enfield was still a British company. Launched in 2004, the Electra X marked Enfield's genuine bid to be taken seriously in the European market, replacing the older, clunkier ES-badged Bullets that had been essentially Indian-market bikes shipped overseas unchanged.

Power comes from Royal Enfield's "Lean Burn" 499cc air-cooled single, developed in partnership with Austrian powertrain specialist AVL specifically to meet incoming Euro 3 emissions standards — a genuine engineering collaboration, not just a badge update. A 28mm Mikuni CV carburetor feeds the engine, delivering a claimed 23-25 hp at 5,000-5,500 rpm, run through a 4-speed gearbox (some later "5S" variants added a fifth gear) with a conventional left-foot gear change and right-foot brake — itself a genuine modernization, since older pre-2004 Bullets ran an old-school right-side shift with an upside-down pattern. Rider Magazine's own road test found the bike genuinely small and slow by modern standards, with a 53.5-inch wheelbase and 412 lb wet weight that immediately signals its throwback nature, though Ultimate Motorcycling's contemporary review admitted having "an absolute ball" despite — or maybe because of — being "mercilessly underpowered."

A modified frame, new front forks, mudguard, and single 280mm front disc brake rounded out the chassis updates versus earlier Bullets, with Avon Super Venom or Roadrunner tires providing genuinely period-correct rubber. The Electra X's basic-but-charming reputation extended to ownership costs — Bennetts' guide notes parts remain remarkably cheap, with even a complete front mudguard running around £70, though electrical faults and finish quality (rusting spoke wheels, corroding chrome) are common complaints on used examples. Fuel economy consistently tops 70 mpg, and simple carb-and-points maintenance means most owners service these bikes entirely at home. This generation gave way to the fuel-injected UCE 500 (Unit Construction Engine) launched internationally in 2008, which finally brought EFI, hydraulic valve lifters, and an integrated gearbox to the Bullet name.
