Cycle World's own take on the Classic 500 nails what makes it different from any modern motorcycle: former Editor-in-Chief Mark Hoyer, who's owned a 1954 British single, admitted "there is a pretty powerful attraction to what the new Enfield offers... you get it without all that character building in the garage." Introduced back in 2008 and refined through this generation, the Classic 500 harkens back deliberately to the post-war era, complete with a sprung solo seat, die-cast headlight casing, and a "peashooter" exhaust.

Power comes from a 499cc air-cooled single-cylinder engine, four-stroke OHV design with an 84mm x 90mm bore and stroke and an 8.5:1 compression ratio — a genuine mechanical throwback given most modern singles run considerably higher compression. For 2017, Royal Enfield replaced the carbureted setup with electronic fuel injection (Keihin), delivering a claimed 27.2 hp at 5,200 rpm and 30.5 lb-ft of torque at 4,000 rpm, run through a 5-speed gearbox with wet multiplate clutch and chain final drive. The engine retains both electric and kick start — genuinely rare in a modern production motorcycle, and a deliberate nod to the bike's heritage.

The chassis uses a single downtube frame with the engine as a stressed member, paired with a telescopic front fork (130mm travel) and twin gas-charged rear shocks with 5-step preload adjustment (80mm travel) — simple, serviceable hardware in keeping with the bike's uncomplicated character. Braking comes from a single 280mm front disc with a 2-piston caliper and a 152mm rear drum, riding on 19-inch front and 18-inch rear wheels. Riders have consistently reported the low-to-mid-range torque delivery makes city traffic and highway cruising genuinely effortless, with sustained speeds up to 70 mph achievable, though vibration and wind resistance increase noticeably above 65 mph given the upright riding position. Seat height sits around 31 inches (787mm), with a 13.5-litre fuel tank and 193kg (425 lb) kerb weight. This 2017-2020 EFI/B5 generation met Euro 4 emissions standards before the Classic 500 was phased out of most markets in favor of newer Royal Enfield platforms.
