Up to this point, Enfield India had built only 350cc Bullets, even though the underlying engine architecture (originally cast-iron, later switched to an all-alloy top end) had already been modernized incrementally over the decades.

Power comes from a 499cc air-cooled OHV single, sharing its chassis, four-speed separate gearbox, and cycle parts directly with the smaller 350 — genuinely the same bike underneath, just displaced up for markets wanting more torque. A single carburetor (Mikarb from 1987 onward, replacing the earlier Bing unit) fed the engine, delivering output modest even by the standards of the era, in keeping with the Bullet's decades-long design philosophy of prioritizing durability and low-end torque over outright performance. Curbside Classic's own history notes the Bullet's old-fashioned separate gearbox — considered an anachronism by most manufacturers decades earlier — actually proved advantageous during this era, making it straightforward for Royal Enfield to eventually fit an entirely different powerplant when the company introduced a genuinely unusual diesel-engined Bullet variant in 1993.

Throughout the 1990s and into the 2000s, Royal Enfield worked to keep this classic pushrod single compliant with increasingly strict emissions regulations — a challenge the company's own historical materials describe as constant and ultimately unsustainable on the old architecture, which is precisely why the international UCE (Unit Construction Engine) 500 launched in 2008, folding the gearbox and crankcase into one integrated unit for the first time and adding electronic fuel injection. This 1989-2007 generation represents the last extended run of the traditional pre-unit 500, sold in steadily improving build quality through UK and European importers as classic-bike enthusiasm for the marque grew across the 1990s and early 2000s.
