Trail Blazer: Polaris’s Two-Stroke Sport ATV with an Automatic Transmission
One of the most successful quads Polaris produced, the Trail Blazer 250 is a lightweight, easy-to-ride sport ATV with an automatic transmission and a racy design. Its overall dimensions are close to those of 400-class machines, though it was never really meant for speed or the roughest trails. The 2004 model listed at $3,399. In stock form top speed is about 45 mph.
Power comes from a 244cc air-cooled, single-cylinder, reed-valve two-stroke engine with a 72mm x 60mm bore and stroke and a 6.1:1 compression ratio. It’s fed by a 30mm Mikuni carburetor, and it runs on a premix of fuel and Polaris two-stroke oil (TC-W3). It has electric start with a pull-start backup. Power output is about 22 hp at 5,250 rpm. Drive is through the Polaris Variable Transmission (PVT) with an E-Z Shift lever for forward, neutral and reverse, then a 520 O-ring chain to a two-wheel-drive rear axle.
Parts for the 250 fit only the two-stroke engine. The air-cooled engine has no coolant system, and the carburetor and exhaust are model-specific, so a four-stroke Trail Boss 330 needs its own manual.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Polaris Trail Blazer 250 running the way it was built to.
