Ranger 500 (2007-2011): Polaris’s Midsize Utility Vehicle with a 499cc Single and Fuel Injection
The Ranger 500 is Polaris’s midsize side-by-side. It’s small enough that one owner said it fits in the back of his truck, but it carries a bed load and tows like a full-size utility vehicle, and it offered a single-seater camo version. Versions sold in these years included the Ranger 500 2x4, the 4x4 (carbureted), the 4x4 EFI, the 2010 4x4 H.O. EFI and the 2011 Ranger 500 EFI, listed at $8,999. Fuel injection came in from 2006, and the carburetor versions had a different fuel system, so the carburetor and EFI manuals aren’t interchangeable.
Power comes from a 498cc liquid-cooled single-cylinder four-stroke with four valves per cylinder and pushrod-operated valves, making a claimed 32 hp (about 24 kW) on the 2011 EFI model. Fuel is injected on the EFI bikes. Drive is through Polaris’s Variable Transmission (PVT), a belt-driven CVT with Hi/Low range and reverse, and shaft drive to the wheels. Selectable 2WD and 4WD is available on the 4x4 versions.
Wheels are 12-inch steel, with 25 x 10-12 front and 25 x 11-12 rear tires on the 2011 bike. The front has hydraulic disc brakes and strut suspension. Confirmed figures list a 2,740mm (108-inch) length, a 1,440mm (57-inch) width, a 1,829mm (72-inch) wheelbase and a 34-litre (9-gallon) fuel tank. Dry weight is about 479 kg (1,056 lbs), and the bed holds 500 lbs (226.8 kg).
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Polaris Ranger 500 running the way it was built to.
