Polaris Brutus, Brutus HD and Brutus HD PTO (2013-2014): The Diesel Commercial Utility Vehicle with Hydrostatic Drive

The Brutus was the first vehicle from Polaris’s commercial vehicle division, a diesel-powered, hydrostatic-drive utility vehicle built on the Ranger XP 900 chassis with many extra improvements for commercial work. It came in three versions. The base Brutus was $15,199 and has an integrated hydraulic system. The Brutus HD ($17,999) adds front hydraulic attachments and an implement joystick control, with three optional hydraulically controlled front-end attachments that turn one vehicle into several. The Brutus HD PTO ($23,999) adds a mechanical front PTO, which delivers power straight from the engine to front attachments (a first in its class), plus a factory enclosed cab with heat, defrost and air conditioning, and an electric cargo box lift. It was also the first side-by-side utility vehicle to use a work-grade suspension, for a smooth ride with or without a load.

Power comes from a 904cc, three-cylinder, liquid-cooled diesel engine with indirect injection, making 24 hp. The transmission is an automatic hydrostatic with a treadle pedal that lets you travel forward and in reverse without shifting gears, with H, L, N and Park positions, and a hydrostatic engine braking system. The drive is on-demand true AWD/2WD with a VersaTrac turf mode.

The suspension is a dual A-arm at the front and a multi-link coil-over De-Dion at the rear, each with 6 inches of travel. The brakes are hydraulic discs on all four wheels with dual-bore front calipers, and the tires are 25x10-12 at the front and 25x11-12 at the rear on stamped steel wheels. The wheelbase is 84 inches (2,134mm), the width is 64 inches (1,626mm), and the height is 73 inches, with 10 inches (254mm) of ground clearance (7 inches on the PTO). The base Brutus is 123.5 inches long, and the HD and HD PTO are 140 inches long.

The Lock & Ride cargo box (43.5 x 54 x 11.5 inches) carries 1,250 lbs (567 kg), the payload capacity is 1,750 lbs (794 kg), and the 2-inch hitch has a 2,000-lb (907 kg) towing rating. The tank holds 10 gallons (37.9 litres). Dry weight is about 1,643 lbs (745 kg) for the base Brutus, about 1,830 lbs for the HD and about 2,148 lbs for the HD PTO.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Polaris Brutus running the way it was built to.
