V7 III Special (2017-2020): The Chrome-and-Spoke V7 Built on the 2017 Redesigned Small-Block Twin
The V7 III was an overhauled generation of Moto Guzzi's 744cc transverse "small block" twin. For 2017 the engine got entirely new cylinder heads, pistons and cylinder cases, though the bore, stroke and displacement stayed the same. The Special takes its name from the original 1969 V7 Special, and it leans on the traditional look. It's built on the V7 III Stone but differs by having wire-spoke wheels, chrome exhausts, an analog dual instrument (a separate speedometer and tachometer) and a two-tone paint scheme with decorative lines. Colours were Blu Zaffiro (blue) and Grigio Cristallo (grey).
Power comes from the air-cooled 744cc 90-degree V-twin, with pushrod-operated overhead valves, two valves per cylinder, an 80mm x 74mm bore and stroke and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Claimed output was about 48 hp in 2017, rising to about 52 hp at 6,200 rpm in the later years, with about 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) of torque. Fuel is injected, the gearbox is a 6-speed, and final drive is by shaft. Two-channel ABS is standard.
The chassis uses a 40mm fork with 130mm of travel and twin rear shocks with about 93mm of travel. Tires are a 100/90-18 front and a 130/80-17 rear, with Pirelli Sport Demon tires fitted at the factory. The tank holds about 5.5 gallons, giving decent range between fill-ups, and the 2020 V7 lineup started at $8,490 in the US. Noise at idle is 91 dB(A) or below, depending on the year.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2017-2020 V7 III Special running the way it was built to.
