V7 II Stone (2014-2016): Six Speeds, ABS and Traction Control on the Stripped-Back Guzzi

The V7 II is an evolution of Moto Guzzi's classic V7 with enough changes to earn a new name. It was unveiled at Intermot in Cologne in 2014, and the Stone is the basic, stripped-down version, with new matte "Rough" colours in black, red, grey and yellow. The headline is a new six-speed gearbox, with the first and last two ratios reduced to cut the rpm drop between gears. The engine is unchanged in output, but it has been tilted forward 4 degrees and lowered 10mm in a slightly modified frame. The seat is 25mm lower and the footpegs are 25mm lower, which gives the rider more knee room.

Power comes from the air-cooled 744cc 90-degree transverse V-twin, with pushrod-operated overhead valves, two valves per cylinder, an 80mm x 74mm bore and stroke and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. It makes about 50 hp (37 kW) at 6,200 rpm and 60 Nm (44 lb-ft) of torque at 2,800 rpm. Fuel comes from a Magneti Marelli MIU G3 ECU with a 38mm single throttle body, and the exhaust is a two-into-two with a balance pipe, a three-way catalytic converter and twin lambda probes. Final drive is by shaft with a hypoid gear set. The 2015 bike meets Euro 3.

New electronics are a Continental two-channel ABS and Moto Guzzi's MGCT traction control, derived from the California 1400 and simplified. It compares the speed of the front and rear wheels to detect slip, and two indicator lights on the instrument cluster show when ABS or MGCT is working.

The chassis is a double-cradle steel tubular frame with a 40mm fork (130mm of travel) and twin rear shocks with adjustable spring preload. Confirmed figures list a 1,449mm wheelbase, a 27°50' rake and 138mm of trail. The fuel tank holds 17 litres. What separates the Stone from its Special and Racer siblings is its lightweight alloy wheels, and it drops the chrome of the other trims for matte black. The 2015 V7 Stone listed at about $8,490 in the US.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2015-2016 V7 II Stone running the way it was built to.
