California 1400 Touring: The Fully Equipped Flagship with Windshield, Hard Bags and Driving Lights

The California 1400 Touring is the full-dress version of Moto Guzzi's new flagship. Cycle World called it the best California in the model name's 42-year run. It comes with a windshield, large hard saddlebags, engine and saddlebag guards, chrome driving lights, a two-tone seat echoing the original 1970s California, a more comfortable passenger seat and higher handlebars that bring the grips closer to the rider. At launch it came in two editions, the Ambassador and the Eldorado, and an optional Piaggio Multimedia Platform lets an iPhone act as a supplementary dashboard. Its rear suspension has 10mm less travel than the Custom's.

The engine is the largest twin ever built in Europe, a 1,380cc air- and oil-cooled 90-degree V-twin with a single overhead cam and four valves per cylinder. It has a 104mm x 81.2mm bore and stroke and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Output is a claimed 96 hp at 6,500 rpm and about 120 Nm (88 lb-ft) at 2,750 rpm, through a 6-speed gearbox and shaft final drive. It's fed by a Magneti Marelli ride-by-wire system with a 52mm throttle body, three engine maps, three-level traction control and cruise control, and ABS is standard.

Wheels are an 18-inch front with a 130/70 tire and a 16-inch rear with a 200/60. Confirmed figures list a 66.3-inch (1,685mm) wheelbase, a 96.2-inch length, a 29.1-inch (740mm) seat height, a 5.4-gallon (20.5-litre) tank and a dry weight of about 710 lbs (322 kg), or about 743 lbs (337 kg) wet. The 2013 US MSRP was $17,990.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Moto Guzzi California 1400 Touring running the way it was built to.
