California 1400 Custom: The Stripped-Down "Bruiser Cruiser" with Drag Bars and a Low Saddle

Moto Guzzi launched the California 1400 in two versions, the fully equipped Touring and the leaner Custom. Compared with the Touring, the Custom has more than 20 detail changes. The windscreen, hard bags, spotlights and engine guard are gone, giving a bike about 48 lbs lighter that testers found notably more agile. It has drag-style handlebars, a sport saddle and a 28.3-inch seat, about an inch lower than the Touring's, in a lesser-chromed black-and-gray look. Because it has no panniers, the engineers gave it a sportier, more compliant rear suspension tune, and it uses adjustable rear shocks.

The engine is the same as the Touring's. It is a 1,380cc air- and oil-cooled 90-degree V-twin with a single overhead cam and four valves per cylinder, with a 104mm bore, an 81.2mm stroke and a 10.5:1 compression ratio. Output is a claimed 96 hp at 6,500 rpm and about 120 Nm (88 lb-ft) of torque at 2,750 rpm, through a 6-speed gearbox and shaft final drive. It is fed by a Magneti Marelli ride-by-wire system with a 52mm throttle body, three engine maps (Turismo, Veloce and Pioggia/Bagnato for wet), three-level traction control and cruise control, and ABS is standard.

The wheels are aluminium alloy with ribbed spokes, an 18-inch front on a 130/70 tire and a 16-inch rear on a 200/60. Confirmed figures list a 66.3-inch (1,685mm) wheelbase, 32 degrees of rake with 6.1 inches of trail, a 5.4-gallon (20.5-litre) tank, and a dry weight of about 661 lbs (300 kg). The 2013 US MSRP was $14,990.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Moto Guzzi California 1400 Custom running the way it was built to.
