25/30 EFI FourStroke: The Compact Outboard That Made EFI Standard at This Horsepower

Boats.com's own review didn't hedge on the significance of this launch: "no other manufacturer offers EFI at this horsepower rating." Mercury built the 25/30 EFI FourStroke around a genuinely smaller powerhead than the outgoing 25 BigFoot and 30/30EFI models it replaced — a deliberate downsize that made the new motors both more compact and meaningfully lighter than their predecessors.

Power comes from a 500cc three-cylinder, single-overhead-cam four-stroke, delivering — per Mercury's own current marketing — the fastest speed and acceleration among 3-cylinder, 30hp outboards in its class. Electronic fuel injection comes standard across the entire lineup, including manual (rope) start models — a genuine first at this horsepower rating, and one that Mercury built to run battery-free on manual-start units, delivering efficient, reliable performance without a bulky cranking battery weighing the boat down. Boats.com's testing found dry weight for the lightest configuration came in at just 163 lbs, a meaningful drop from the old 30 FourStroke's 204 lbs, and lighter than rival four-strokes like the Suzuki DF30 at 209 lbs.

Buyers could configure the lineup extensively: remote or tiller controls, manual (25hp only) or gas-assist (30hp only) or power tilt-and-trim, electric or manual start, and a purpose-built 25hp ProKicker for precision trolling alongside a commercial-grade 25hp SeaPro variant. Electric-start models compatible with Mercury's SmartCraft digital technologies gave boaters access to intelligent gauges and displays, backed by a 17-amp alternator generating genuinely useful battery-charging output for anglers running multiple depth finders and other electronics through a long day on the water. Mercury's own maintenance design includes a no-spill oil change system, easy-change gear lube, and a lifetime maintenance-free valve train — genuine time savings for owners who'd rather spend a Saturday fishing than wrenching.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 25/30 EFI FourStroke outboard running the way it was built to.
