1290 Super Duke GT (2017): "The Sophistication of Roger Moore, the Charisma of Morgan Freeman and the Explosive Punch of Conor McGregor"
Cycle News' own launch review doesn't undersell this bike's genuine dual personality: "the KTM 1290 Super Duke GT has the sophistication of Roger Moore, the charisma of Morgan Freeman and the explosive punch of Conor McGregor." Motorcycle.com's own first-ride confirms the genuine engineering investment behind that dual character: "it would be unfair to think of the GT as just an R with a windscreen, as it underwent a cornucopia of changes: KTM claims the GT's development required more than 30 man-years of work."
Power comes from the LC8, a 1,301cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin, DOHC with 8 valves and a 13.2:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 173 hp — Cycle News' own testing confirms the genuinely extreme torque figures for a bike in this category: "the 2017 KTM 1290 Super Duke R, by comparison, produces 88 lb-ft at 4000rpm, with 103 lb-ft in total at 7000rpm. Those torque numbers are on the extreme side for a category essentially dominated by four-cylinder machines — BMW S 1000 XR, Kawasaki [Concours 14]" and similar rivals. Motorcycle.com's own testing found this substantial engine genuinely well-mannered in daily use despite its output: "considering it houses 1301cc of power, the bike is remarkably manageable. Clutch pull is surprisingly light for being able to handle such a stout motor, and the precise transmission requires just a soft nudge to navigate through the gears."
Motorcycle.com's own review confirms this GT genuinely earned its title as one of the most capable sport-tourers built to that date: "the Super Duke GT is one of the few sport-touring bikes with performance levels high enough to do well on a racetrack." The genuinely comprehensive electronics package included a first-ever KTM quickshifter, semi-active WP suspension, cornering ABS, cruise control (adjustable in third gear or above, and settable as high as 125 mph), heated grips, and standard electronic tire-pressure monitoring — Motorcycle.com's own review flags a genuine speed limitation KTM specified when the optional saddlebags are fitted: "speeds should be kept below 113 mph with the bags," a real caution learned from earlier wobbling issues at speed on the related 1190/1290 Adventure models when similarly loaded. Rider Magazine's own long-term test found the chassis and suspension genuinely transformative for everyday touring use: "a first-rate chassis and semi-active suspension make the 1290 Super Duke GT a delight on any mountain road," with the review's editor-in-chief calling the bike upon first ride "nearly flawless, the perfect sport-touring bike for a rider who doesn't want to give up sportbike levels of engine performance and handling." That same long-term review flagged genuine mid-cycle running changes worth knowing between early and later 2017 production: "KTM says it made minor changes to the tuning of the WP semi-active suspension, the windscreen is now clear instead of tinted and the kickstand tang is now shorter and stronger," while noting persistent engine heat as a real, if manageable, consideration for hot-weather riding. Curb weight sits at 451.9 lbs (205 kg), with a 32.9-inch seat height and a tubular chrome-molybdenum steel space frame.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2017 1290 Super Duke GT running the way it was built to.
