990 Super Duke R (2007-2013): The Premium-Spec Version That Made the Standard Bike Look Tame

Building on the standard 990 Super Duke's already aggressive foundation, KTM introduced the "R" variant for 2008, running through 2011 before further updates carried the model into 2013 — a genuine step-up trim built specifically for riders wanting sharper handling, stronger braking, and a more track-focused riding position than the base model offered, without stepping outside the proven 990 platform.

Power comes from the same LC8 999cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin shared across KTM's 990-badged lineup, DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, an 11.5:1 compression ratio, and a 101mm x 62.4mm bore and stroke, run through a 6-speed gearbox with wet clutch and X-ring chain final drive. Where the standard Super Duke aimed for a broadly usable naked-bike experience, the R variant's engine tuning and lighter overall weight combined to deliver a genuinely sharper, more aggressive riding experience — the kind of hooligan character that's made KTM's big V-twins a cult favorite among riders who want genuine excitement over outright refinement.

The chassis carries the same steel tube trellis frame architecture as the standard Super Duke, but the R designation typically brought premium suspension and braking components as standard equipment rather than options — fully adjustable WP suspension front and rear, paired with high-spec Brembo braking hardware, mirroring the upgrade path KTM applied across its 990-badged Supermoto R and other "R"-trim models of the era. This combination of lighter weight, sharper suspension tuning, and stronger brakes gave the Super Duke R a genuinely different on-road character than the standard bike, appealing directly to riders who wanted the 990 platform's raw V-twin character wrapped in genuinely capable, confidence-inspiring chassis hardware. The model continued through 2013 before KTM's much more powerful 1290 Super Duke R took over the "Beast" mantle, pushing output and technology considerably further with a larger displacement engine and comprehensively updated electronics package.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2007-2013 990 Super Duke R running the way it was built to.
