990 SMT/SM-T (2009-2013): "The Current All-Rounder King" That Turned a Hooligan Bike Into a Tourer
MCN's own review nails the SM-T's identity with genuine enthusiasm: "it's being hailed as the current all-rounder King offering all things to all riders," combining "all the mental fun of a supermoto with the comfort, practicality and ability to cover miles of an adventure bike." Bennetts' buying guide traces the lineage directly: KTM realized just how practical its manic 990 Supermoto platform could be, and split it into two distinct machines for 2009 — the spartan, lighter Supermoto R, and this touring-focused SM-T, sharing the same fundamental engine and running gear without any real detuning.
Power comes from the Rotax-built LC8, a 999cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin, DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, shared across KTM's big-bike lineup of the era including the 990 Super Duke and 990 Adventure. MCN's review found the 115 hp V-twin genuinely stronger than its numbers suggest on the road — "way faster than you'd think." Bennetts' own assessment is more measured about low-end character: the engine "can be a little juddery and lumpy low down" but "smooths out higher up in the rev range and is generally responsive and lively," run through a 6-speed gearbox with twin, high-mounted exhausts that Bennetts calls "fruity" and cleverly designed with built-in mounting points for the official panniers.
The SM-T's touring identity comes from genuine hardware, not just badging: a larger fairing and more relaxed riding position than the standard Supermoto, fully adjustable WP suspension (with the fork internals modified from the standard bike's setup to remove some travel for a more composed road feel), top-line radial Brembo brakes, and forged Marchesini wheels. A 19-litre fuel tank delivers a genuinely useful working range approaching 200 miles at high-40s mpg fuel consumption. 2011 brought Bosch-developed disconnectable ABS — adding just 1kg while preserving the bike's sporty temperament — alongside a 12V socket and other minor equipment updates. Dry weight sits around 196kg (432 lbs), with a seat height starting at 855mm. This platform was eventually succeeded by the 1290 Super Duke GT in 2016, following the 990 line's discontinuation when the 1290 Super Duke arrived in 2013.
