990 SMR/Supermoto R (2008-2013): "Absolutely Stonking," and Genuinely Unfit for Anything but Pavement

MCN's own owner review sums up the SMR's entire personality in one line: "absolutely brilliant motorcycle, can do it all, except off road." That's precisely the point — where the 990 Adventure chases dirt-road capability and the SM-T adds touring comfort, the Supermoto R strips everything back to pure, tarmac-focused hooliganism. That same review calls it "hysterical" on the road, "a complete hooligan bike" built to turn twisty roads into "a private race track."

Power comes from the LC8, a 999cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin, delivering a claimed 114 hp at 9,000 rpm and roughly 71.5 lb-ft of torque at 7,000 rpm — MCN's review notes it "has buckets of grunt" even if throttle response can feel "a little lumpy low down." Genuine engineering distinguishes the R from its SM-T touring sibling: forged Marchesini wheels (versus the T's cast units) and reduced bodywork shed a real 7kg (15 lbs), with dry weight settling around 191-192kg (421-423 lbs) depending on model year — the R's whole reason for existing is going without the T's fairing and luggage mounts to stay genuinely lighter and sharper.

The chassis pairs a tubular chromoly steel trellis frame with a fully adjustable 48mm WP inverted fork, delivering the kind of multi-adjustable, high-spec suspension MCN's reviewer found worked "perfectly on track" — every adjustment clearly noticeable in how the bike responded. Radial-mount Brembo four-piston front calipers on twin discs, paired with a single rear disc and Bosch 9M+ ABS on later models, deliver genuinely strong, confidence-inspiring braking. High, wide handlebars make low-speed maneuvering effortless despite the aggressive intent, while a tapered aluminum bar and elongated seat give riders maximum freedom of movement for committed, aggressive riding. TopSpeed's own review of the later SM R calls it "the most radical twin-cylinder Supermoto on the market" — genuinely versatile enough for daily urban riding, mountain-pass carving, and full track days alike, a rare combination for a bike this focused. This platform ran through 2013 before KTM's 990-badged lineup gave way to the significantly more powerful 1290 Super Duke R generation.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2008-2013 990 SMR/Supermoto R running the way it was built to.
