Power comes from the LC8, a liquid-cooled 999cc 75-degree V-twin, DOHC with 4 valves per cylinder, delivering a claimed 98-105 hp at 8,250 rpm and 71-74 lb-ft of torque at 6,000-6,500 rpm through a 6-speed transmission with chain final drive. Bennetts' own buying guide traces the mid-cycle refinement: 2009 brought an updated engine (now making 106 hp), with the "S" designation renamed "R" and gaining a more powerful 116 hp variant alongside genuine suspension upgrades — that reworked crank, per MCN's review, took "the edge off" the earlier engine's vibey crudeness, leaving a "punchy motor with a typical V-twin lumpy but involving delivery," genuinely well-suited to both back-road playing and loaded, two-up touring.

A powder-coated chromoly steel trellis frame uses the engine as a stressed member, paired with a 48mm WP upside-down fork offering 210mm of travel and a WP PDS monoshock with hydraulic preload adjustment at the rear, delivering the same 210mm — genuinely long-travel, off-road-capable suspension for a full-size adventure bike. Braking uses dual 300mm floating front discs with Brembo calipers and a 240mm rear disc, with optional two-channel ABS on the standard model (the R and, later, S variants ran without ABS for genuine off-road use).
