950 Supermoto R: The Premium Trim That Made Supermoto's Big-Bore Experiment Even Sharper

Following the standard 950 Supermoto's genuinely groundbreaking 2006 debut — the first big-displacement V-twin to enter a category that had, until then, been exclusively single-cylinder territory — KTM introduced the R variant as a step-up trim built specifically for riders wanting sharper handling and premium components layered onto the standard bike's already novel V-twin-supermoto formula. It's the same fundamental engineering breakthrough Visordown's launch review of the standard model called proof that "Supermoto has officially grown up," just taken a step further.

Power comes from the same LC8 942cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin shared with the standard 950 Supermoto, four-stroke, delivering output in the same range as its sibling — a claimed 98 hp at 8,500 rpm and roughly 70 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm — mounted in the identical powder-coated tubular chromium-molybdenum steel space frame that gave the whole 950 platform its genuinely race-derived chassis architecture. The R designation followed the pattern KTM applied across its broader 950/990 lineup during this era — the Super Enduro R and, later, the 990 Supermoto R both used the "R" badge to signal a lighter, more focused, premium-suspension version of the standard model rather than a different engine or displacement.

Where the R trim distinguished itself was in suspension and component spec: genuinely higher-quality WP suspension components and reduced bodywork weight versus the standard 950 Supermoto, mirroring the upgrade path KTM took with the contemporary 950 Super Enduro R, which ran the same base LC8 engine architecture in an off-road-focused chassis with substantially more suspension travel. The half-fairing, single-headlight styling, under-seat exhaust, and lightweight five-spoke wheels carried over from the standard model, with the R's chassis tuning aimed specifically at sharper, more confidence-inspiring handling for aggressive road riding — the genuine precursor to the further-refined 990 Supermoto R that succeeded this platform from 2009 onward, after KTM's broader 950-to-990 displacement bump across its big-twin lineup.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2006-2008 950 Supermoto R running the way it was built to.
