Having introduced its first production Supermoto back in 1998 with the single-cylinder 620LC4 and enjoyed a genuinely impressive 42% average annual sales growth in the category since, KTM took the format somewhere no one else had — a big V-twin engine in a class that had, until 2006, been exclusively the domain of single-cylinder machines. Autoevolution's own retrospective notes the reasoning plainly: "you can only go so far with a single cylinder motor before it becomes unmanageable or unreliable."

Power comes from the LC8, a 942cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin, four-stroke, delivering a claimed 98 hp at 8,500 rpm and roughly 70 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm, mounted in a powder-coated tubular chromium-molybdenum steel space frame — genuinely lightweight, race-derived chassis engineering brought to a road-going supermoto for the first time at this displacement. Visordown's review found the resulting combination made "any rider feel good on the saddle" despite admitting the styling "didn't necessarily look good," a fair trade for the genuine novelty of big-twin torque in a supermoto package.

Standard equipment reflected the model's road-focused, half-faired positioning within KTM's broader 950 lineup: a half fairing with a single headlight unit, a high-mounted front fender for genuine ground clearance, a wide handlebar for confident low-speed control, a one-piece dual seat with pillion grab rails for two-up capability, an under-seat-mounted exhaust system for a cleaner, more compact rear end, and lightweight five-spoke wheels shod in road-biased rubber rather than the knobby tires found on its 950 Adventure and Super Enduro siblings. Sharing its fundamental LC8 engine architecture with those off-road-focused stablemates, the 950 Supermoto distinguished itself through road-tuned suspension and bodywork specifically built for tarmac performance rather than trail capability — the direct precursor to the later, further-refined 990 Supermoto R and SM-T that would carry the format forward from 2009 onward.
