790 Duke: KTM’s “Scalpel” Parallel-Twin Streetfighter

The 790 Duke is KTM’s middleweight naked, nicknamed “the Scalpel” for its razor-sharp handling. It was KTM’s first parallel-twin streetfighter, built for riders who wanted more than a lightweight single but less than a litre-class bike. The 2022 return was pitched to fill the gap between the 390 Duke and the 890 Duke, in traditional KTM orange or grey and black. Standard equipment includes cornering ABS with a Supermoto mode and Sport, Street and Rain riding modes, and the bike can be fully customised with KTM PowerParts.

Power comes from a 799cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel-twin with four valves per cylinder, an 88mm x 65.7mm bore and stroke and a 12.7:1 compression ratio. Dell’Orto fuel injection and a Bosch ride-by-wire engine management system feed it. It makes a claimed 105 hp (78 kW) at 9,000 rpm and 87 Nm (64 lb-ft) of torque at 8,000 rpm. The reintroduced 2022 version is tuned to 95 hp for European A2 riders, with the rest of the world keeping 105 hp. The gearbox is a 6-speed with a PASC anti-hopping slipper clutch and 520 X-ring chain final drive, and KTM quotes about 4.4 litres per 100 km.

The chassis is a chromium-molybdenum steel frame that uses the engine as a stressed member. Suspension is a 43mm WP inverted fork with 140mm of travel and a WP rear shock with preload adjustment and 150mm of travel. Confirmed figures list 24 degrees of rake, 98mm of trail and a 66-degree steering head angle. Because the 2018-2020 bike, the 890 Duke that replaced it and the 2022 revival differ in engine tune and electronics, check the model year and VIN before ordering parts.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a KTM 790 Duke running the way it was built to.
