390 Duke (2016): "Strictly an Urban Guerrilla" — KTM's Sub-$5K Naked That Punches Above Its Class

Ultimate Motorcycling's own review frames the genuine value proposition this bike represented at launch directly: "when it comes to putting $5k on the table for a new bike, the choices are pretty good, but there's really only one truly special street motorcycle in that price range — the 2016 KTM 390 Duke. With many of the styling cues of the amazing KTM 1290 Super Duke R, the 390 Duke gets the job of thrilling the rider done at less than a third of the cost and displacement." That same review sums up the bike's genuine mission succinctly: "consider the 390 Duke to be strictly an urban guerrilla, taking you through city streets quickly, efficiently, and with lots of excitement."

Power comes from a 373.2cc liquid-cooled DOHC single-cylinder engine, an 89mm x 60mm bore and stroke, delivering a claimed 43-44 hp and roughly 26 lb-ft of torque at 7,250 rpm, fed by electronic fuel injection through a 6-speed transmission with a mechanically operated PASC anti-hop clutch. Ultimate Motorcycling's own testing confirms the genuine real-world character: "there are two things you want to know immediately about the 390 Duke to get an idea of how to approach the bike. It puts out 44 horsepower and weighs just 306 pounds," while noting that despite being "a thumper, the 26 ft/lbs torque peak at 7250 rpm is not overwhelming. This makes threading through traffic less stressful, as there is enough power, though not too much." A separate Ultimate Motorcycling buyer's guide confirms the genuine mechanical relationship with KTM's track-focused sibling: "it retains the same 43 horsepower motor that powers the RC [390], so it will not yield to any small sportbike... with the front end relaxed and the wheelbase lengthened from its track-ready RC 390 brother, the Duke will be less of a handful on the street."

MCN's own review flags a genuinely important quality note relevant to earlier bikes in this generation before it stabilized: "although early examples suffered from overheating and build quality could be iffy (Dukes are built in India and then shipped to Austria for inspection) these problems have been solved." That same review confirms genuinely learner-friendly hardware: standard ABS, a fairly basic digital dash, and an accessible 800mm (31.5-inch) seat height paired with a low, thin seat profile — "even shorties won't have a problem touching the floor." TotalMotorcycle's own factory specification sheet confirms this exact 2016 model year's chassis: a powder-coated steel trellis frame, WP upside-down 43mm fork and WP monoshock both offering 150mm of travel, a four-piston radial front brake caliper on a 300mm disc, and Bosch 9MB two-channel ABS. Owner reviews collected on Motorcycle.com are consistently enthusiastic: one 53-year-old rider called it "the best bike I have ever owned. Tons of fun, lite, handles great, sit up position, cruises 70 mph on freeway great," with the only genuine complaint being the stock seat, which the same owner replaced with KTM's Ergo seat for improved comfort. Autoevolution's own model history confirms 2017 brought the platform's next genuine update, including a larger front brake disc, an LED headlight, and a TFT display — meaning this exact 2016 model year represents the final, most refined chapter of the original first-generation 390 Duke before that substantial redesign.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2016 390 Duke running the way it was built to.
