KTM 390 Adventure (2020-2022): The Beginner-Friendly Travel Enduro
The 390 Adventure is KTM’s first beginner adventure motorcycle, built around the 373cc single from the 390 Duke, with styling cues that match the larger adventure bikes. Unlike its street-focused sibling it’s made for the dirt, with long-travel WP APEX suspension (6.7 inches at the front and 7 inches at the rear), a 19-inch front and 17-inch rear cast wheel and an ABS off-road mode that disengages ABS at the rear wheel. It doesn’t skimp on tech, with Bosch cornering ABS, motorcycle traction control, a ride-by-wire throttle and a slipper clutch. It’s also light, at about 348 lbs dry, and the 2020 US price was $6,199.
The engine is a 373cc liquid-cooled DOHC single with four valves, finger followers and a DLC-coated 89mm piston with a 60mm stroke, at a 12.6:1 compression ratio. A 38mm Bosch throttle body feeds it, with Bosch ride-by-wire engine management. KTM claims about 43-44 hp at 9,000-9,500 rpm and 37 Nm (27.2 lb-ft) of torque at 7,000 rpm, and the bike is Euro 5 compliant from 2022. The gearbox is a six-speed with a PASC slipper clutch (mechanically operated) and chain final drive.
The front suspension is a 43mm WP APEX inverted fork with about 170mm (6.7 inches) of travel, and the rear is a WP APEX monoshock with about 177mm (7 inches) of travel. Brakes are a single 320mm front disc with a radially mounted four-piston caliper and a 230mm rear disc with a two-piston caliper, with Bosch 9.1MP two-channel ABS. Wheels are 2.50 x 19 at the front and 3.50 x 17 at the rear, with a 100/90-19 front tire and a 130/80-17 rear tire. Rake is 26.5 degrees, with about 98mm (3.8 inches) of trail on a 1,430mm (56.3-inch) wheelbase.
Seat height is 855mm (33.6 inches), with about 200mm of ground clearance. The tank holds about 14.5 litres (3.8 gallons). The 390 Adventure weighs about 158 kg (348 lbs) dry, and KTM’s own figure without fuel is 161 kg.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 390 Adventure running the way it was built to.
