KTM 1290 Super Adventure R (2017-2019): The V-Twin Travel Enduro with 21/18 Wire Wheels
The 1290 Super Adventure R is KTM’s most off-road-oriented big adventure bike, built on the 1,301cc V-twin of the 1290 Super Duke R (the “Beast”) with rally-bred chassis and described by KTM as the “Alpha in the herd.” The R has a 21-inch front and 18-inch rear wire-spoked wheel with aluminum tubeless rims and 220mm of fully adjustable WP suspension, a much smaller windshield than the touring version and a seat height of 890mm. For 2017 the engine got Euro 4 homologation and new expansion chambers in the intake for smoother power in the low and mid range. The electronics include ride-by-wire with cruise control, a cornering ABS with a disengageable off-road mode and multiple riding modes, and the 2019 US price was $18,499.
The engine is a 1,301cc liquid-cooled 75-degree V-twin with DOHC and four valves per cylinder (eight in all), a 108mm x 71mm bore and stroke and a 13.1:1 compression ratio. Two 52mm Keihin throttle bodies feed it, with dual ignition and forced lubrication with three oil pumps. KTM claims 160 hp (118 kW) at 8,750 rpm and 140 Nm (103.7 lb-ft) of torque at 6,750 rpm, with 108 Nm already available at 2,500 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with a hydraulic PASC anti-hopping clutch and a chain final drive.
The frame is a chrome-moly tubular space frame, with a 48mm WP fully adjustable upside-down fork with about 220mm (8.6 inches) of travel and a WP PDS rear shock. Steering head angle is 64 degrees, with 123mm of trail on a 1,580mm (62.2-inch) wheelbase. Tires are a 90/90-21 at the front and a 150/70-R18 at the rear (the TKC version has Continental TKC 80 tires), and brakes are dual front discs and a rear disc with cornering ABS. Ground clearance is about 250mm (9.8 inches).
Seat height is 890mm (35 inches). The tank holds about 23 litres (6 gallons), and the 30-litre tank is the S model’s. The R weighs about 217 kg (478 lbs) dry and about 240 kg (529 lbs) ready to ride with fuel.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1290 Super Adventure R running the way it was built to.
