ZX-12R (2002-2006): "In Pursuit of the Hayabusa" — Radial Brakes and Refined Behavior Close Out the Run
Motoplanete's own retrospective on the 2004 redesign captures Kawasaki's genuine engineering challenge with this bike honestly: "in pursuit of the Hayabusa, Kawasaki has produced a high-tech missile that's not necessarily easy to ride. To make it more accessible and still as demonic as ever, the ZX-12R has been redesigned." This 2002-2006 span covers the second and third generations of Kawasaki's hyperbike — the substantial 2002 update through to the model's 2006 discontinuation, right before it was replaced by the more touring-oriented ZX-14.
Power comes from a 1,199cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with 16 valves, delivering a claimed 178 hp at 10,500 rpm and roughly 99 lb-ft of torque at 7,500 rpm, run through a 6-speed manual gearbox with chain final drive, reaching a genuine top speed around 185-188 mph. Cycle World's own period review captured the character perfectly: "Kawasaki's open-class sportbike combines brute muscle with a responsive, solid-handling chassis. Whether you're staring down a dragstrip or carving along a twisty mountain road, the big Ninja's tractable power and raw acceleration can blur the landscape like few other machines can." MCN's own year-by-year breakdown confirms 2002 brought new bodywork, ram-air intakes, gearbox tweaks, a retuned engine for snappier acceleration, and a strengthened crankshaft — genuine mechanical refinement addressing the earlier generation's rougher edges.
The genuinely significant hardware upgrade within this span arrived in 2004: Motoplanete's own coverage confirms "from 2004 onwards, the very big Ninja is no longer encumbered by standard 6-piston calipers; the clamps are now 4-piston radial calipers" — a real braking upgrade that MCN's own testing found let "the Kawasaki ZX-12R rider to push that bit harder than a Hayabusa owner might dare." Motoplanete's own French-market review of the 2004-2006 update notes the changes were "mainly internal" — new fuel mapping, a flywheel with more inertia, and a reinforced clutch — while externally the bike gained only a larger, better-designed air intake, a taller windscreen bubble, and smaller mirrors, with the fundamental monocoque aluminum frame and 1,199cc engine carrying forward essentially unchanged. Suspension consisted of a 43mm fully adjustable inverted cartridge fork (120mm travel) and a Bottom-Link Uni-Trak piggyback rear shock (123mm travel), with dual 320mm front discs and a 230mm rear disc. 2005 brought only an all-black paint option with no mechanical changes, and 2006 closed out the model's run with no further updates before discontinuation. Dry weight sits around 210kg (463 lbs), with a seat height of 810mm.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2002-2006 ZX-12R running the way it was built to.
