ZX-9R E1/E2 (2000-2001): Visordown's Verdict — "Suddenly Makes a Lot of Sense" for Fast Touring, Sunday Blasts, and Everything In Between

Visordown's own review captures exactly why this bike still earns real affection years later: "fast touring down to the South of France, hack the Sunday blast with your mates, scratch with the best of them and still show 180mph on the speedo when you need it to, the ZX-9R suddenly makes a lot of sense." Bennetts' own used-buying guide confirms the genuine mechanical work behind this exact 2000 update: "the E1 model got a bolt-on subframe, a subtly redesigned fairing, bigger brake discs and more midrange as well as a little more power."

Power comes from an 899cc liquid-cooled inline-four, fed by four Keihin carburetors (40mm downdraft units with the K-TRIC ignition-control system on later years), delivering a claimed 143 hp at 11,000 rpm and 101 Nm (75 lb-ft) of torque at 9,200 rpm. Autoevolution's own confirmed account details the genuine engineering behind this year's power gain: "shorter carburetors, an increased compression ratio, and larger diameter header pipes," alongside a stiffened frame with enlarged front engine mounting bolts, alloy bushings on the top rear engine mount replacing rubber, and larger-diameter swingarm pivot and wheel spindles.

Autoevolution's own confirmed chassis account lists a 46mm RWU adjustable telescopic fork and a Uni-Trak piggy-back adjustable monoshock, braking through dual 310mm front discs with six-piston calipers and a 220mm rear disc with a single-piston caliper on 17-inch alloy wheels. Visordown's own testing found the gearbox genuinely good on the road, praising the box as "one of the nicest to use here," though noting it "can be a drag" at the track due to lever travel.

A real ZX-9R.Net forum discussion flags a genuinely useful identification quirk worth knowing between these two model years: "an E1 was the only model with 200mph on the speedo" — a real, checkable detail for confirming which of the two the bike in front of you actually is, since both share near-identical mechanical specification otherwise. The distinctive twin-headlight fairing and separate ram-air intake introduced with this update carried through both the 2000 (E1) and 2001 (E2) model years before Kawasaki's ZX-10R replaced the ZX-9R entirely for 2004.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2000-2001 ZX-9R E1/E2 running the way it was built to.
