Ninja ZX-10R (2021-2024): The Base Model MCN Says Most Riders Are Actually Better Off Buying

MCN's own comparison against the exclusive ZX-10RR makes the case for the standard bike plainly: "unless you are a pro racer you are probably better off saving £9000 and buying the standard model" — genuine praise for a bike that shares nearly all of its meaningful racing-derived engineering with its pricier homologation-special sibling, minus a few thousand pounds' worth of exotic parts most street riders will never fully exploit.

Power comes from a 998cc liquid-cooled inline-four, fed by Digital Fuel Injection through four throttle bodies, delivering a claimed output in the mid-190hp range through a 6-speed gearbox. Cycle World's own buyer's guide details the substantial 2021 update this generation was built around, developed directly from Kawasaki's World Superbike racing program: revised intake ports, DLC-coated finger followers in the valve train, shorter ratios across the first three transmission gears, a new oil cooler, and a redesigned exhaust. The fairing gained integrated aerodynamic downforce winglets, a taller windscreen, and lighter, more compact LED lighting — genuine functional upgrades rather than pure styling exercises.

Chassis updates for this generation included a lower swingarm pivot for improved corner grip, longer axle adjustability in the swingarm for fine-tuning chain tension and wheelbase, softer front fork settings paired with a stiffer rear shock, and ergonomic revisions moving the handlebars further forward at a flatter angle while raising the footpegs — genuine changes aimed at getting the rider into a more optimal race-inspired position. Cycle News's own 2024 coverage confirms the comprehensive electronics package carried through this run: Kawasaki Cornering Management Function (KCMF) working off a Bosch IMU, Sport-Kawasaki TRaction Control (S-KTRC), Kawasaki Launch Control Mode, Kawasaki Intelligent anti-lock Brake System (KIBS), engine brake control, a quickshifter, an Öhlins electronic steering damper, electronic cruise control, and multiple power modes — a genuinely comprehensive rider-aid suite for a bike at this price point. The aluminum twin-spar frame pairs with a Showa Balance Free Front Fork and horizontal back-link rear suspension using a Showa Balance Free Rear Cushion shock, the same fundamental suspension architecture shared with the RR. A TFT color instrument display connects to smartphones via Kawasaki's Rideology app. 2024 brought integrated bodywork winglets for further improved aerodynamics, offered in both standard Metallic Flat Spark Black/Ebony and KRT Edition colorways, with both available in ABS and non-ABS configurations.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2021-2024 Ninja ZX-10R running the way it was built to.
