Z650 (2017-2019): Retiring the ER-6n Name in Favor of a Genuine 1976 Homage

Motoplanete's own French retrospective captures the genuine identity shift Kawasaki made for 2017: "2017 was the year of renewal for Kawasaki's entry-level roadster, which took the opportunity to give it a new identity in order to completely reposition it in its range, as it now joins the Z series alongside the Z1000 and Z900... old-timers will appreciate the nod to the 1976 Z650." Wikipedia's own account confirms the naming genuinely honors that heritage — the original air-cooled, four-cylinder 1976 Z650 made 66 hp at 220 kg, a machine this new liquid-cooled parallel-twin bears no mechanical relation to beyond sharing a badge and general silhouette, succeeding the outgoing Ninja 650R/ER-6n directly.

Power comes from a 649cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin, DOHC with 8 valves, an 83.0mm x 60.0mm bore and stroke, delivering a claimed 67 hp at 8,000 rpm and roughly 48.5 lb-ft of torque at 6,500 rpm. MCN's own review notes a genuinely deliberate trade-off in this generation: peak power dropped 4 hp versus the outgoing ER-6n, a change one French owner reviewer specifically wished had gone the other direction given Suzuki's contemporary SV650 made more power for similar money — but MCN's own testing found the trade genuinely worthwhile in practice, since "the 10kg lighter trellis frame is all new, as is the swingarm, which has a further weight-saving of 2.7kg: overall the Zed is 17kg lighter... this significant reduction in weight and improved low to mid-range power makes the Z650 more enjoyable and easier to ride than its predecessor," meaning the power-to-weight ratio actually improved despite the lower peak figure.

MCN's own review confirms Euro4-mandated ABS came standard across the range, alongside Kawasaki's first-ever application of an assist-and-slipper clutch on this platform — "makes for light lever action when changing gears" while also preventing rear-wheel lockup during aggressive downshifts. The chassis pairs a high-tensile steel trellis frame with a 41mm telescopic fork (125mm travel, non-adjustable) and a horizontal back-link shock with preload adjustment (130mm travel) — MCN's testing found both ends "more than adequate out of the box" for the naked-bike class. 2018 brought a genuine market-expansion move: a restricted, A2-licence-compliant version for newer riders in markets with tiered licensing, alongside new Metallic Matte Covert Green, Candy Lime Green, and Metallic Spark Black colorways. A range-topping Z650 Performance variant arrived for 2019 at a £1,000 premium, adding a full Akrapovič exhaust (2kg lighter than stock), a smoked screen, a tank pad, and a pillion seat cowl for a sportier aesthetic. Seat height sits at 30.9 inches, with dry weight around 187kg (412 lbs). This generation carried through 2019 before EICMA that November brought a genuine mid-cycle refresh — a new seat, updated instruments, and full LED lighting replacing the previous halogen units — ahead of further Euro5 engine updates in 2020.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2017-2019 Z650 running the way it was built to.
