Z1000 (2010-2013): A Longer-Stroke 1,043cc Engine and the First "Sugomi" Design
Motorcycle News calls this the version that dropped the old 953cc ZX-9R-derived motor for a new 1,043cc liquid-cooled, fuel-injected inline-four with a 5.1mm longer stroke than before, to boost midrange power. Kawasaki's styling for the bike, called Sugomi, is built around a mass-forward, crouching stance and a predator-glare front end. Kawasaki later said its newer Z1000 pushes that concept "even further" than this 2010-2013 model.
Power comes from a 1,043cc liquid-cooled DOHC 16-valve inline-four. It has a 77mm x 56mm bore and stroke and an 11.8:1 compression ratio. Fuel comes from four 38mm Keihin throttle bodies with oval sub-throttles. Claimed output is 138 hp (101 kW) at 9,600 rpm and 81 lb-ft (110 Nm) at 7,800 rpm, through a 6-speed gearbox with an X-ring chain.
The chassis is an aluminum twin-tube backbone frame with a 41mm inverted fork, adjustable for compression, rebound and preload, and a horizontally mounted back-link gas shock. Brakes are dual 300mm semi-floating petal discs with radial-mount four-piston calipers and a 250mm rear petal disc. Tires are 120/70ZR17 front and 190/50ZR17 rear.
Confirmed figures list a 4-gallon (15.1-litre) tank, a 32.1-inch (815mm) seat height and a weight of 481-509 lbs depending on source. Owners rate it 4.7 out of 5 for reliability and quote roughly £120 for a year of servicing. Variants within the range include a Black Edition (2011-2012), a 2012-2013 Special Edition, and an ABS version that became standard in 2013. The Z1000SX sport-tourer shares this engine. The Z1000 was replaced by a restyled 2014 model after this generation.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2010-2013 Z1000 running the way it was built to.
