Kawasaki Versys 1000 KLZ1000 (2019-2023): The Facelifted Sport-Tourer with IMU Electronics

The 2019 update gave the Versys 1000 a facelift with a full ride-by-wire throttle, an IMU-based electronics package (Kawasaki’s cornering management function, KCMF, with cornering ABS and three-mode KTRC traction control), two power modes, cruise control, a bigger adjustable screen, LED lighting and a revised design. The easy-riding, ultra-smooth four-cylinder is as good in town as it is on the open road, with a DC socket on the dash, a centre stand and adjustable levers, and a slipper/assist clutch, with an optional quick-shifter. The higher-spec SE adds Kawasaki’s electronic semi-active suspension (KECS, with Showa “Skyhook” software from 2021), a quick shifter, a color TFT display with smartphone connectivity, cornering lights, four ride modes and heated grips, and the LT versions add panniers.

The engine is a 1,043cc liquid-cooled inline four with four valves per cylinder (16 in all), a 77mm x 56mm bore and stroke and a 10.3:1 compression ratio, with fuel injection and electronic throttle valves. Kawasaki claims about 118-120 hp (87-88 kW) at 9,000 rpm and 102 Nm (75 lb-ft) of torque at 7,500 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with a wet multi-plate slipper/assist clutch and chain final drive.

The frame is a twin-tube aluminum design, with a 43mm inverted fork (about 150mm of travel, adjustable for rebound and preload) and a rear monoshock with remote preload adjustment and rebound adjustment (about 152mm of travel). Brakes are dual 310mm semi-floating front discs with monobloc four-piston radial calipers and a 250mm rear disc with a one-piston caliper, with cornering ABS. Tires are a 120/70ZR17 at the front and a 180/55ZR17 at the rear. Wheelbase is 1,520mm (59.8 inches), and ground clearance is about 150mm (5.9 inches).

The Versys 1000 is about 2,270mm (89.4 inches) long and 895mm (35.2 inches) wide, and 1,400-1,465mm high depending on the screen position. Seat height is 840mm (33.1 inches), with an optional 820mm seat. The tank holds 21 litres (5.5 gallons). The Versys 1000 weighs about 253-258 kg (558-569 lbs) wet, with the SE and LT versions at the heavier end.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Versys 1000 KLZ1000 running the way it was built to.
