Versys 1000/KLZ1000 (2012-2015): Kawasaki's Genuine "Big Supermoto" Take on the Adventure-Touring Segment

Bennetts' own retrospective doesn't hedge on how unconventional this bike's approach genuinely was: "when the Versys 1000 (which stands for Versatile System if you care...) arrived in 2012 it marked Kawasaki's proper entrance into the rapidly emerging adventure segment. However, in typical Kawasaki fashion, they did it their way — and that meant ignoring adventure-sized wheels and instead going for 'big supermoto' 17-inch items and then arming their bike with an inline four motor." That same review confirms the genuine result: "a bike with no off-road pretence, the Versys 1000 quickly established its own niche as a simply brilliant do-it-all."

Power comes from a 1,043cc liquid-cooled inline-four, delivering a claimed 116-118 hp at 9,000 rpm and roughly 75 lb-ft (102 Nm) of torque at 7,700 rpm — MCN's own review confirms the genuine engineering pedigree behind this engine: "based on the Z1000, the four cylinder, in line motor is stunning and will out-grunt the legendary GS with ease. Compression has been lower compared to the Z1000 and the fuelling has been tweaked." Bennetts' own detailed used-buying assessment confirms exactly how well-suited this retuned engine proved for touring duty: "the Versys has the same 1043cc inline four as the Z1000SX and it is a really underrated engine that suits this style of bike perfectly. Far from revvy or lacking in grunt, Kawasaki deliberately engineered into" the platform genuine mid-range accessibility over a peaky, top-end rush.

Autoevolution's own spec sheet confirms the 2013 model came equipped with a genuine three-mode Kawasaki Traction Control (KTRC) system and a Power Mode Selector letting riders switch between two distinct throttle-response tunes — Bennetts' own review confirms exactly what that split delivered: "there are two power modes with Low Power only giving around 75% of Full Power mode, ABS and three-level traction control. None are angle-responsive, this only arrived on the third generation of Versys alongside cruise control, but they are ok for most road uses." MCN's own testing praised the everyday practicality this generation delivered despite its supermoto-inspired wheel sizing: "with its 21-litre tank, sumptuous comfort levels and relaxed upright riding position, the Versys 1000 makes smashing out the miles a dream. And it is even fun in the bends when you get to your destination."

Standard Versys 1000 trim gave way to genuine touring-focused variants within this same generation — Bennetts' own coverage confirms Kawasaki "released a GT model (Grand Tourer) that added" factory luggage as standard, while owners could add heated grips, hand guards, and brighter accessory lighting to address the stock lights' genuine dimness, a common complaint noted across owner feedback. Braking used dual 300mm front petal discs with four-piston calipers and a single 250mm rear petal disc, with MCN's own owner reviews confirming genuine long-term reliability: "no reason to question the reliability either as the Zed 1000 motor has proven bulletproof," alongside consistent praise for value against pricier rivals like the BMW R1200GS and Triumph Tiger Explorer, the latter of which "comes without any electrical rider aids" that this Versys offered as standard. Wikipedia's own production timeline confirms this exact first-generation configuration ran through 2015, before Kawasaki's substantially reworked second-generation model — new styling, a two-litre-larger tank, and a power bump to 118bhp via new cylinders, cylinder heads, injectors and air filter — took over for 2015-2018, ahead of the further electronics-heavy 2019 update that finally introduced angle-responsive traction control and cruise control to the range.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2012-2015 Versys 1000 (KLZ1000) running the way it was built to.
