Kawasaki Versys 650 KLE650 (2007-2009): The Ninja 650R Chassis Turned Adventure-Tourer

The Versys was built on the light-steering chassis of the Ninja 650R, with its own riding position, rear subframe, longer banana-shaped swingarm, suspension components and engine tuning. Kawasaki retuned the 649cc parallel twin for more low-end and mid-range torque, with different camshafts and fuel injection mapping, so it’s lively enough for experienced riders but predictable for newer ones. It has long-travel adjustable suspension (an upside-down fork at the front), an adjustable windscreen, a seat of about 840mm and optional ABS, and its neutral handling and upright ergonomics make it good for commuting, back roads and touring. Top speed is about 122 mph.

The engine is a 649cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel twin with four valves per cylinder (eight in all), an 83mm x 60mm bore and stroke (some sources quote 84mm x 61mm) and a 10.6:1 compression ratio. Fuel injection with two 38mm Keihin throttle bodies feeds it. Kawasaki claims 64 hp (47 kW) at 8,000 rpm and 61 Nm (45 lb-ft) of torque at 6,800 rpm. The gearbox is a six-speed with chain final drive.

The front suspension is a long-travel upside-down fork and the rear is a linkage-assisted shock, both adjustable. Brakes are dual front discs and a rear disc, with optional ABS. Tires are a 120/70ZR17 at the front and a 160/60ZR17 at the rear. Wheelbase is 1,415mm (55.7 inches), and ground clearance is about 180mm (7.1 inches).

The Versys 650 is about 2,125mm (83.7 inches) long, 840mm (33.1 inches) wide and 1,315mm (51.8 inches) high. Seat height is about 840mm (33.1 inches). The tank holds about 19 litres (5 gallons). The Versys 650 weighs about 181 kg (399 lbs) dry and about 206 kg (454 lbs) wet.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a Versys 650 KLE650 running the way it was built to.
