Cycle World's own buyer's guide called it plainly: this is "much more than a facelifted Ninja 300." Kawasaki threw most of the old bike away and started fresh for 2018 — new engine, new chassis, new styling — replacing a Ninja 300 that simply couldn't clear Euro4 emissions standards. Motorcycle News gave it 4 out of 5 stars at launch, praising its ease of use and "ultra-reliability," and Cycle World later named it Best Lightweight Streetbike in its 2018 Ten Best Bikes awards. Power comes from a 399cc liquid-cooled DOHC parallel-twin, 8 valves with a 70.0mm x 51.8mm bore and stroke and an 11.5:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 49 hp at 10,000 rpm and 28 lb-ft of torque at 8,000 rpm — a genuine 35% displacement bump over the outgoing Ninja 300, translating to power that can comfortably match fast-moving traffic rather than struggle to keep up. A 6-speed gearbox with an assist-and-slipper clutch rounds out the drivetrain, using dual cam profiles to lighten clutch-lever feel in normal riding while resisting rear-wheel hop on aggressive downshifts. The chassis is where the real transformation happened: an H2-inspired steel trellis frame, developed using Kawasaki's dynamic rigidity analysis for maximum stiffness at minimal weight, paired with a short wheelbase and long swingarm for genuinely light, nimble handling. Non-adjustable 41mm inverted forks (up from 37mm) and a twin-piston front caliper biting a larger 310mm petal disc — borrowed from the ZZ-R1400 parts bin — delivered a real braking upgrade, while lighter wheels contributed to a claimed 8kg total weight saving over the Ninja 300. Styling deliberately echoed Kawasaki's flagship models: a sharp front cowl with chin spoilers evoking the Ninja H2 and ZX-10R, a triple-peak tail cowl matching the H2's design language, and slim LED headlights and taillight for a more premium look than an entry-level machine typically gets. September 2019 brought new Kawasaki Racing Team graphics for the 2020 model year, and ABS became a genuinely worthwhile option throughout this run for riders wanting the extra safety margin. Seat height holds at a low, accessible 30.9 inches (785mm), with curb weight around 362-366 lbs depending on ABS.
