Mule 3010 Trans4x4 (2005-2007): The Convertible That Turns a Passenger Seat Into Cargo Space
Kawasaki's own genuinely clever engineering idea here was the world's first convertible utility vehicle — at a glance, the Trans4x4 looks like any other 3010, but a rear folding bench seat transforms the passenger area into extended cargo bed space in seconds, no tools required. It's the Mule 3010 platform's answer to a genuinely common problem: buyers who need maximum hauling capacity one day and extra seating the next, without owning two separate machines.
Power comes from the proven 617cc liquid-cooled V-twin, four-stroke with overhead valves, a 76mm x 68mm bore and stroke, and a 10.3:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed 34.7 lb-ft of torque at 2,500 rpm through a Mikuni BW26 carburetor. Off-Roading Pro's own mechanical breakdown highlights a genuinely thoughtful design touch: the fuel tank sits under the cargo bed, positioned behind an under-seat fuel gauge, giving technicians unrestricted access to the fuel pump for service or cleaning — a detail that matters considerably once the convertible bed configuration is in regular use. A dual-range belt-drive torque-converter automatic transmission handles shifting through an H/L/N/R sequence, feeding a selectable four-wheel-drive system.
The chassis pairs front MacPherson strut suspension with a DeDion rear leaf-spring setup — a genuinely different rear suspension design than the 3010's non-Trans siblings, chosen specifically to handle the added structural demands of a convertible bed-and-seat configuration under load. Four-wheel sealed hydraulic drum brakes handle stopping duty, with rack-and-pinion steering delivering genuinely car-like handling feel for a working utility vehicle. Wet-sump forced lubrication uses 1.9 quarts of SAE 10W-40 meeting JASO MA/MA1/MA2 standards, while the front gearcase and transmission run separate hypoid gear oils specified by ambient temperature. Later 2007-2008 model years also introduced a 953cc three-cylinder diesel-powered Trans4x4 variant sharing the same convertible-bed concept, giving buyers a choice of powertrain alongside the transformable cargo capability.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2005-2007 Mule 3010 Trans4x4 running the way it was built to.
