Meguro K3 800: Kawasaki Comes "Full Circle" — Reviving the Very Brand That Inspired the Bike It's Based On
RideApart's own coverage captures the genuine, circular irony behind this bike's existence: Kawasaki pretty much comes full circle with the W800-based K3 — the very series of Meguro motorcycles that initially inspired the W800 in the first place. Meguro began as an ironworks in the 1920s, later building a licensed copy of BSA's A7 badged the Meguro K, before Kawasaki fully absorbed the company in 1963-1964 and evolved those K models into its own W-series — meaning this modern K3 genuinely closes a six-decade loop in Kawasaki's own corporate history.
Power comes from a 773cc air-cooled parallel-twin, SOHC with bevel drive, delivering a claimed 51-52 hp (Japan-market figures) at 6,500 rpm and roughly 46-62.9 lb-ft of torque at 4,800 rpm through a 5-speed transmission — genuinely mechanically identical to the donor W800, with Motorcycle News' own confirmed account noting the K3's slightly higher output simply reflects that the UK-market W800 is deliberately detuned for A2 licence compliance, while the K3 isn't.
Real styling differences from the W800 are deliberately restrained: Meguro-specific badging on the tank and side panels, white pinstripes, round binocular-style analogue gauges with a classic katakana "Meguro" logo inside the speedometer, and a mirror-coat black and ebony colourway. Kawasaki's own product copy confirms genuine attention to period-correct detail: modern paint and surface-finishing techniques were used specifically to recreate the visual character of original Meguro Manufacturing machines.
Standard equipment mirrors the donor W800, including basic electronic rider aids despite the otherwise bare-bones specification. This model launched in Japan on 1 February 2021 at ¥1,276,000 (roughly $12,200 at the time), with Kawasaki confirming no plans to bring it to other international markets despite having trademarked the Meguro name worldwide.
