KX450F (2016-2018): Kawasaki's "Newest, Brightest Star" Settles Into Its Reign
Dirt Bike Magazine's own retrospective traces the arc perfectly: "in 2016 the Kawasaki KX450F was the newest, brightest star in the 450 class." Just two years later, that same publication called it "the old-school alternative" — not because Kawasaki fell behind, but because rivals moved fast while the KX settled into a proven, four-year production cycle. Motocross Action summed up the whole generation bluntly: "with four-year production cycles, only small changes are made," and 2018 closed out the run with essentially nothing new beyond graphics.
The 2016 redesign was genuinely comprehensive — new engine cases that were lighter yet more rigid, a revised cylinder head with smoother intake ports, larger 36mm titanium intake valves borrowed conceptually from Kawasaki's supersport engines, and a new "bridged-box bottom" piston design based directly on the AMA factory motocross racer. The cylinder itself moved forward 8.5mm to reduce reciprocating friction, and a more compact 43mm Keihin throttle body improved response. Total claimed weight savings came to 7.5 lbs versus the 2015 model, split between engine, transmission, and even the kickstarter shape — enough that Motorcycle.com's testers noticed the lighter front end immediately on track.
The 449cc liquid-cooled DOHC single carries a new, slimmer aluminum perimeter frame with spars 6mm thinner than before, retaining Kawasaki's launch control system and three swappable DFI couplers for standard, hard, or soft terrain mapping — fully customizable further through the optional handheld KX FI Calibration Kit, no trackside laptop required. 2017 brought a redesigned rear shock linkage, a stiffer top triple clamp, remapped fueling to reduce decel popping, a lightened shock spring, and in-mold graphics — genuine refinements Motocross Action found "much improved" over the sometimes-abrupt 2016 mapping. Kawasaki remained the last of the "Big Four" running an air fork (Showa SFF-TAC) through this entire generation, a point of ongoing debate among testers who found it plush but occasionally prone to blowing through travel on big landings. Seat height sits around 37.4-37.6 inches, with claimed fueled weight of roughly 240 lbs.
