Kawasaki KLV1000 2004-2007 Service Manual

Few badge-engineering stories are as blunt as the KLV1000. Visordown's own review didn't mince words: "the KLV may have Kawasaki on the tank, but this is simply a Suzuki V-Strom in different attire," and pointed out Kawasaki left the actual Suzuki manufacturer sticker on the frame. Built by Suzuki and sold through Kawasaki dealers as a rebadged DL1000 V-Strom, it's Suzuki, not Kawasaki, that appears as the manufacturer on the bike's own registration documents — an unusually candid arrangement for two direct competitors.

Power comes from a 996cc liquid-cooled V-twin, a detuned version of Suzuki's TL1000 sportbike engine, delivering a claimed 98 hp at 7,600 rpm and around 75 lb-ft of torque at 6,400 rpm through a 6-speed gearbox with hydraulic clutch. An aluminum twin-spar frame, 43mm conventional telescopic fork, and a preload-and-rebound-adjustable rear monoshock round out the chassis, with a substantial 22-litre fuel tank borrowed straight from the DL1000 donor bike.

Visual differences from the Suzuki original were genuinely minor: reshaped fenders, a different windscreen, dual headlights instead of the V-Strom's signature beak, and Kawasaki's own colorways, most notably a bright orange scheme. Despite the shared underpinnings, contemporary reviews found the KLV a competent, comfortable all-rounder for road use, if unremarkable off-road and lacking the sharper edge of pricier rivals like the BMW R1200GS or KTM 990 Adventure. It was pulled from Kawasaki's range after a short production run, reportedly due to soft demand and a price that ended up higher than the Suzuki it was based on.
