Concours 14/1400GTR (2008-2017): The ZX-14-Engined Tourer That Refused to Slow Down

The name "Concours" traces back to the French Concours d'Elegance, a nod Kawasaki carried forward when it fully reinvented its long-running sport-touring flagship for 2008 — replacing the 1986-2006 GTR1000/Concours 1000 with an entirely new machine built around a detuned version of the class-leading ZX-14 supersport engine. It was a bold combination: supercar-grade acceleration wrapped in genuine touring practicality, and it earned a reputation as one of the most capable long-distance sport-tourers of its era.

Power comes from a 1,352cc liquid-cooled inline-four, DOHC with 16 valves, delivering a claimed 155 hp at 8,800 rpm and roughly 100 lb-ft of torque at 6,200 rpm, run through a 6-speed gearbox with maintenance-free shaft final drive — a genuine advantage over chain-drive rivals for high-mileage touring. The engine uses variable valve timing derived from a Mitsubishi automotive design, continuously advancing intake camshaft phasing up to 24 degrees as rpm rise and fall for a broader, more usable powerband. Independent testing recorded 0-60 mph in under 3 seconds and a quarter-mile in the low 10-second range — genuinely startling numbers for a fully-faired tourer with hard panniers.

2010 brought the most significant mid-cycle update: Kawasaki added KTRC traction control and replaced the original ABS with K-ACT (Kawasaki Advanced Coactive-braking Technology), a power-assisted, linked braking system that distributes front and rear brake force automatically depending on riding conditions, alongside revised bodywork for improved engine-heat management and a redesigned dashboard. 2012 brought smaller front rotor carriers to resist warping, and 2015 delivered a genuine rideability refresh: a shorter first-gear ratio for stronger acceleration off the line, revised fuel mapping, a different steering stem seal for lighter turn-in, stiffer rear suspension, and updated ABS calibration — all without touching the core engine. Standard equipment throughout the run included Kawasaki's keyless KIPASS proximity ignition system, an electrically adjustable windscreen, side-mounted hard panniers, and a full fairing. Wet weight sits around 670-679 lbs depending on ABS equipment, with a 5.8-gallon tank.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2008-2017 Concours 14/1400GTR running the way it was built to.
