Bayou 400/KLF400 (1993-1999): Kawasaki's Genuinely Long-Running Mid-Size Utility Quad

It Still Runs' own breakdown of the 1999 final-year model confirms the 400cc Bayou "was manufactured until 1999," offered in both 2x4 and 4x4 configurations across its production run and building on the broader Bayou nameplate that Kawasaki had already made popular in the ATV market. This final model year came equipped with four-wheel drive as one of its more capable feature sets, closing out a genuinely stable six-year run before the platform gave way to Kawasaki's later Prairie line.

Power comes from a 391cc single-cylinder four-stroke engine, SOHC, with a 3.19 x 2.99-inch bore and stroke and a 9.0:1 compression ratio, delivering a claimed net torque of 23.9 lb-ft at 5,000 rpm, fed by a Keihin CVK32 carburetor with liquid cooling and digital capacitive discharge ignition. Electric start came standard, running through a wet-sump lubrication system — genuinely straightforward, easy-to-service mechanical fundamentals that helped make the Bayou 400 a popular, trusted mid-size utility ATV throughout the 1990s.

The chassis uses a tubular double-cradle steel frame, with a dual A-arm front suspension delivering 5.1 inches of travel paired with a quad-link rear suspension offering matching 5.1 inches — genuinely balanced suspension geometry front to rear rather than a mismatched setup. Braking used dual hydraulic front discs paired with a single rear drum, riding on tubeless AT24x8-11 front and AT24x10-11 rear tires. It Still Runs' own dimensional data confirms a 595 lb dry weight, a 47.24-inch wheelbase, and a genuinely useful 7.28 inches of ground clearance for added maneuverability across uneven trails and rough terrain.

Because this platform ran essentially unchanged across its 1993-1999 production span, factory documentation genuinely covers the entire model range as a single reference — the fundamental engine, carburetor, ignition, and chassis architecture stayed consistent year to year, with the main differences between individual model years typically limited to minor equipment options like 2x4 versus 4x4 configuration rather than substantial mechanical redesigns. Correct carburetor and starter part identification does still matter when sourcing replacement components, since Kawasaki reused visually similar parts across the related Prairie 400 (KVF400) that followed this platform, and the two families share enough design lineage that mismatched parts are a genuine risk without confirming the exact model code.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1993-1999 Bayou 400/KLF400 running the way it was built to.
