John Deere X700 / X720 / X724 / X728 Select Series: The Premium Garden Tractors with Four Drive-and-Steering Options

Deere's X700 Select Series, built in Horicon, Wisconsin, was a family of premium garden tractors that came in four versions. The X720 is the two-wheel-drive model. The X724 is two-wheel drive with all-wheel steer. The X728 is four-wheel drive, and the X729 (2008-2012) adds all-wheel steer to the four-wheel-drive version. Special Edition versions of the X720 and X728 added an upgraded seat with armrests plus tilt and lumbar adjustment, better tires and a brush guard.

Power comes from a 27 hp Kawasaki 745cc two-cylinder gasoline engine. Drive is hydrostatic with power steering and wet disc brakes. On the X728 the four-wheel-drive system changed partway through, from a mechanical front-wheel drive (MFWD) on the 2006-2008 tractors to a hydraulic front-wheel drive (HFWD) from 2009. The fuel tank is 6.5 gallons on the 2006-2010 tractors and 5.2 gallons from 2011.

The operator's station is open, with an 18-inch seat with 7 inches of adjustment, tilt steering, a cupholder, a toolbox and a 12-volt outlet. A soft-side or hard cab was optional. The hydraulics run at 924 psi with two valves, and flow is 4.5 gpm on the two-wheel-drive models and 6.0 gpm on the X728. Power takeoff is a 2,000 rpm independent mid PTO as standard, with a 540 rpm rear PTO and a 2,000 rpm front PTO optional. A Type 0 rear hitch is standard, with a Type 1-Limited hitch as an option.

The serial number tag is on the center-right of the main frame, just behind the hydraulic couplers. In 2011 the tractors listed from $8,749 for the X720 to $10,369 for the X728. Because the four models share an engine but differ in drive, steering and hydraulics, use the serial number to confirm the exact model before ordering parts.
