Grand Cherokee (2011-2013): The "Most Awarded SUV Ever" Comes From Chrysler's Comeback

The WK2 generation Grand Cherokee arrived in 2010 as a 2011 model at a genuinely pivotal moment for the brand — Jeep's parent company had barely survived the 2008 financial crisis, and Chrysler's new pairing with Fiat gave the WK2 the resources it needed to become, in Jeep's own words, "the Most Awarded SUV Ever," collecting over 30 awards from outlets including Car & Driver, Consumers Digest, and Motor Week. Unveiled at the 2009 New York Auto Show, the redesign represented a genuine engineering leap: an all-new body with more than 5,400 welds delivered a 146% increase in torsional rigidity over the outgoing WK generation, while four-wheel independent suspension — a first for the Grand Cherokee — replaced the previous solid-axle setup for meaningfully improved on-road manners.

The 2011-2013 range offered three distinct engines. The standard powerplant was Chrysler's brand-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6, delivering a claimed 290 hp — a genuine step forward for the brand's V6 lineup. Buyers wanting more shove could step up to the 5.7-liter HEMI V8 at 360 hp, while the range-topping SRT8 packed a 6.4-liter HEMI V8 good for 470-475 hp and up to 465 lb-ft of torque, delivered through a 5-speed automatic across the standard range (the SRT8 gained a 6-speed). International markets also had access to a 3.0-liter VM Motori turbo-diesel V6, offering between 190 and 250 hp depending on model year and tune.

Standard equipment reflected Jeep's genuine 4x4 heritage layered with new luxury ambitions: buyers could choose between Quadra-Trac I, Quadra-Trac II, and Quadra-Drive II four-wheel-drive systems depending on trim, with an optional height-adjustable air suspension capable of raising ride height to a genuinely capable 11.1 inches for serious off-road clearance. The interior brought the WK2's most significant leap over its predecessor — genuine leather trim, wood accents, and modern electronics options that finally matched rival luxury SUVs rather than trailing them. Trim levels for this period ran Laredo, Limited, and Overland, with the SRT8 sitting as a performance-focused halo model. This period predates the 2014 facelift, which brought an 8-speed automatic transmission and the EcoDiesel option, making 2011-2013 the WK2's original, defining configuration.
