Robot 150/165: JCB's Radial-Lift Pair, Powered by a Perkins Indirect-Injection Four

Both machines in this range share the same fundamental Perkins 104.22 diesel engine and radial lift-arm design, scaled across two different operating weight classes — a genuine common platform rather than two unrelated machines sharing a nameplate.

Power comes from the Perkins 104.22, a 2,216cc (135 cu in) four-cylinder indirect-injection diesel, a 4.1-inch bore and 5.2-inch stroke, a 22:1 compression ratio, delivering a gross output of 47.2 hp (35.2 kW) and a net 44.5 hp (33.2 kW) through a hydraulic drive system with a 12.0 GPM pump flow and 2,700 psi relief pressure. Firing order runs 1-3-4-2, genuinely useful reference for anyone performing ignition timing or injector diagnostic work.

The Robot 150 weighs 2.35 tons with a 0.29 cubic metre bucket capacity, a 2.87-metre transport length, and 27/8.5x15 standard tyres, while the larger Robot 165 steps up to 2.43 tons, a 0.37 cubic metre bucket, a 2.9-metre transport length, and 10x16.5 tyres — both sharing a genuinely identical 630kg rated operating capacity and 11.3 km/h top travel speed. A closely related Robot 165 HF variant, built alongside the standard 165 through 1999, carries a marginally heavier 2.46-ton operating weight while sharing the identical engine, bucket capacity, and tyre specification.

Confirmed lift figures for the 165 list a 950-lb capacity at 35% tipping load and 1,400 lbs at 50% tipping, with a lift breakout force of 3,530 lbs and an operating weight of 8,368 lbs — genuinely useful reference figures for anyone checking a specific machine's capacity against its original factory rating before putting it back to work.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a JCB Robot 150/165 skid steer running the way it was built to.
