Indian's launch of the FTR1200 S generated real, immediate industry buzz — Bloomberg News' own coverage titled its 2019 review "'Everyone Loves That Bike!' The Allure of the Indian FTR 1200 S Motorcycle," while Popular Science called it "everything a modern sport bike should be." The S designation marked the range-topping trim within the original 1200-badged lineup, and Indian further layered a genuine Race Replica edition on top — a burgundy frame, race-inspired paint, and Akrapovič end cans distinguishing it from the standard S.
Power comes from the same 1,203cc liquid-cooled V-twin shared across the FTR1200 range, but the S trim adds genuinely more sophisticated electronics and suspension than the base model — a fully digital dash (versus the base bike's simpler analogue clock), more advanced traction control and rider modes, and higher-spec suspension components. MCN's own review notes the base FTR1200 deliberately keeps its simpler analogue clock specifically because it suits the retro flat-track look better than the S's screen, which "looks less like a sat nav strapped to the top yoke" — a genuine, direct trade-off between the two trims rather than the S being unambiguously superior in every respect.
Indian offered over 50 official accessories for this platform, letting owners build out Tracker, Tour, Sport, and Rally-themed accessory packages on top of either the base or S-spec bike. The Sport package added carbon fibre across the front mudguard, tank cover, and seat cowl, while the Rally package brought a high-mounted Akrapovič exhaust, ProTaper rally handlebars, and a raised number plate holder — genuine factory-blessed customization rather than aftermarket guesswork.
This exact 2019-2021 configuration represents the original FTR1200 S specification before Indian's 2022 rebrand dropped the "1200" designation and reworked the platform's chassis geometry, wheel sizing, and suspension into the standalone FTR S that followed.
