Chieftain (2014-2016): "Unlike Any Indian Motorcycle Ever Made"

Ultimate Motorcycling's own launch preview quotes Indian's press materials directly, and the claim holds up: "the Chieftain features a fairing with integrated driving lights, and its power windshield is an industry-first for a fork-mounted fairing." Launched alongside the Chief Classic and Chief Vintage as part of Indian's genuine 2014 relaunch, the Chieftain distinguished itself immediately as the touring flagship of that founding trio — the first Indian ever built with a hard fairing and hard saddlebags from the factory.

Power comes from the Thunder Stroke 111, a 1,811cc air-cooled V-twin with a 3.976 in. x 4.449 in. bore and stroke and a 9.5:1 compression ratio, fed by closed-loop electronic fuel injection through a 54mm throttle bore, delivering a claimed 119.2 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm through a 6-speed transmission with gear-driven wet clutch primary and belt final drive. Indian's own spec sheet lists the full overall gear-ratio spread — 9.403:1 in first down to 2.789:1 in sixth — the same fundamental drivetrain shared across the brand's big-twin lineup, though Indian's own engineering built the Thunder Stroke's exposed-pushrod, vintage-cooling-fin styling specifically to evoke legendary Indian engines of the past.

Standard equipment reflected Indian's genuine ambition to compete directly with established American touring flagships: hard saddlebags with remote locks and quick-release anchors, a power-adjustable windshield, a high-output audio system with integrated Bluetooth smartphone connectivity, tire pressure monitoring, and keyless ignition via a programmable key fob. The chassis pairs cast-aluminum construction with a 46mm telescopic cartridge fork (4.7 in. travel, dual-rate springs) and a pneumatically adjustable single rear shock (4.49-4.25 in. travel), backed by dual 300mm floating front discs with 4-piston calipers and a 300mm rear disc with a dual-piston caliper. MCN's own owner reviews consistently praised the bike's genuine long-distance comfort, with 300-mile days described as easily achievable thanks to cruise control and adjustable suspension. 2014 pricing started at $22,999, with Thunder Black, Indian Motorcycle Red, and Springfield Blue among the launch colorways.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2014-2016 Chieftain running the way it was built to.
