Chief Vintage (2014-2016): Bringing Back a Name That Once Defined American Touring
VikingBags' own history places the Chief Vintage at the center of Indian's genuine relaunch moment: introduced in 2014 alongside the Chief Classic and Chieftain, it debuted with "the same engine, body frame, drive train, suspensions, and fuel control system" as its Chief Classic sibling — the real differentiator was factory-installed touring equipment, namely leather luggage and wind protection, that Indian built in from the start rather than offering as aftermarket add-ons.
Power comes from the Thunder Stroke 111, a 1,811cc air-cooled V-twin with a 3.976 in. x 4.449 in. bore and stroke and a 9.5:1 compression ratio, fed by closed-loop electronic fuel injection through a 54mm throttle bore, run through a 6-speed transmission with a wet multi-plate clutch and belt final drive. Indian's own spec sheet lists the full gear-ratio spread — from 9.403:1 in first gear down to 2.789:1 in sixth — genuinely wide-range gearing suited to both low-speed maneuvering and relaxed highway cruising, exhausting through a split dual system with a crossover pipe.
The chassis pairs a high-tensile steel frame with a 41mm telescopic fork (108mm of travel) up front and a single rear shock (73mm travel), with dual 292mm front discs and a single 292mm rear disc, all hydraulically actuated. Genuine vintage-inspired styling runs throughout: deeply valanced fenders, a teardrop-shaped headlight and matching fuel tank with the instrument cluster mounted on top, and a two-piece dual seat trimmed in distressed brown leather. Standard equipment across this range includes quick-release vintage leather saddlebags, a quick-release Lexan windshield, cruise control, keyless start, and ABS — Indian bundled genuine touring convenience into the base package rather than leaving it optional. 2016 pricing started at $20,999.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2014-2016 Chief Vintage running the way it was built to.
