Springfield (2016): "Effectively a Blend of Two of Indian's Existing Big Twins"
MCN's own review nails exactly what Indian was going for with this bike: "named after the birthplace of Indian motorcycles in 1901, the Springfield is effectively a blend of two of Indian's existing big twins — the Chief Vintage with its Harley Road King-style Plexiglas screen and the Chieftain with its twin hard panniers, or 'bags.'" That same review didn't hold back on the verdict either: "on the evidence so far it could well prove to be the American upstart's best big bike yet."
Power comes from the Thunder Stroke 111, an air/oil-cooled 1,811cc V-twin shared across Indian's big-twin lineup, delivering a claimed 119 lb-ft of torque at 2,600-3,000 rpm through a 6-speed constant-mesh, foot-shift transmission with a gear-driven wet-clutch primary and belt final drive (152-tooth belt, 2.2:1 ratio). MCN's own testing found the massive low-end torque genuinely effortless: "with its massive peak torque available at just 2600rpm, you easily pull away from barely more than idle," pulling to 70+ mph with barely 4,500 rpm showing on the clock, and 80-plus available with just a twist of the wrist.
Indian's own product materials detail the Springfield's genuine quick-change versatility: a removable quick-release windshield and hard, remote-locking, all-weather saddlebags let the bike convert between fully-loaded touring rig and a sharp-handling solo cruiser in a few short minutes, with no tools needed and no ugly leftover mounting hardware once removed. The tubular steel chassis runs the same fundamental architecture as Indian's other big twins but with slightly sharper steering geometry than the Chief Vintage — MCN's review notes this was "something to do with load carrying" — paired with cartridge front forks and an air-adjustable rear shock offering 4.5 inches of travel, capable of carrying up to 533 lbs of combined rider, passenger, and cargo weight. Seat height sits at a genuinely low, manageable 26 inches despite the bike's substantial 820-lb wet weight, with footboards and Indian's "Buckhorn" handlebar canted back for added touring comfort. 2016 pricing started at $20,999.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2016 Springfield running the way it was built to.
