Roadmaster: Reviving a Name Indian Hadn't Used in Over Six Decades

VikingBags' own history frames this bike's arrival as a deliberate nod to a genuinely storied nameplate: "originally produced from 1947-1953, the Indian Roadmaster was widely recognized as one of America's most reliable, feature-laden and comfortable touring bikes, and the all-new 2015 Roadmaster is destined to continue that tradition." Unveiled at Sturgis in 2014 alongside the new Scout, participants reportedly saw it as an advanced Chieftain — though Indian's own design team pushed back on that framing, positioning it instead as the Chieftain's equal sharing a similar platform, but dressed with additional luxury features aimed squarely at long-haul touring comfort.

Power comes from the Thunder Stroke 111, a 1,811cc air-cooled V-twin with a 3.976 in. x 4.449 in. bore and stroke and a 9.5:1 compression ratio, fed by closed-loop electronic fuel injection through a 54mm throttle bore, delivering a claimed 119.2 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm (2,600 rpm on the 2015 model specifically) through a 6-speed transmission with belt final drive. TotalMotorcycle's own spec sheet lists precise overall gear ratios spanning from 9.403:1 in first down to 2.789:1 in sixth — genuinely wide-ratio gearing built for both low-speed maneuvering and relaxed highway cruising.

As Indian's flagship touring model, the Roadmaster came genuinely loaded: a large front fairing with a round headlight and integrated driving lights, a windscreen, a one-piece dual seat with an integrated passenger backrest built into the top box, side-mounted hard panniers, a chromed exhaust system, and large fenders — extensive chrome and progressive styling throughout, per Indian's own marketing. The chassis pairs a steel frame with a 46mm telescopic cartridge fork (4.7 in. travel) up front and a pneumatically preload-adjustable single shock (4.49 in. travel) at the rear, with dual 300mm front discs on 4-piston calipers and a 300mm rear disc on a dual-piston caliper handling braking. 2015 US pricing started at $26,999, climbing to $27,999 for 2016.

This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 2015-2016 Roadmaster running the way it was built to.
