Z50J Monkey (1974-1978): The "Third-Generation Leisure Model" That Finally Got Rear Suspension
Honda's own history site frames the Z50J's significance directly: "the new frame designed for the Monkey Z50J would remain unchanged for subsequent Monkeys for the next three decades... in this sense, the Monkey Z50J played an important role in the evolution of the Monkey." Based on the American-market MINI TRAIL 50 (Z50AK3) introduced by American Honda in 1972, the Z50J brought that formula to Europe and Japan starting in 1973 (sold as 1974 models) at a moment when family motorcycle leisure activities were genuinely taking off in the US.
Power comes from a 49cc air-cooled four-stroke single-cylinder engine, fed by a carburetor, delivering a claimed 3 hp at 7,000 rpm and roughly 2 lb-ft of torque at 5,000 rpm through a 3-speed automatic centrifugal clutch transmission — genuinely simple, twist-and-go operation with no clutch lever required. Honda's own history notes this generation marked a genuine engineering first: "the Z50J was the first Monkey to sit on a rear suspension system," adding two side-mounted rear shocks to complement the telescopic front fork already used on earlier Z-series Monkeys — a real ride-quality improvement over the rigid-rear earlier models.
Autoevolution's own model breakdown details the comprehensive redesign that came with this generation: a completely new frame, a larger fuel tank (growing from 2.5 to 4 litres), block-pattern tires favoring genuine dirt-riding capability, a more comfortable seat, and a rear luggage rack. Honda deliberately dropped the earlier Z50Z's detachable front-end mechanism, but kept the fold-down handlebar — one of the Monkey's most distinctive, defining features — specifically to satisfy customers who still wanted to load the bike into a car trunk for transport, even as the larger fuel tank and dirt-capable tires pushed the Z50J toward genuine standalone leisure-bike use rather than pure portability. Both wheels used drum brakes for stopping power. 1975 brought the Z50J-II, adding new fuel tank graphics and further refined details while retaining the same fundamental architecture, and Honda offered the Z50J across three factory colors throughout this span. This generation's frame and core layout carried forward largely unchanged into the 1978 model year, right before Honda's more substantial 1978 revamp introduced a teardrop-shaped fuel tank, a larger seat, and a genuine 4-speed transmission on the related Z50J-III "Gorilla" variant.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1974-1978 Z50J Monkey running the way it was built to.
