Honda XL125 1976-1977 Service Manual

By the mid-1970s, Honda had already carved out a strong reputation in the dual-sport class, and the XL125 represented a genuine refinement rather than a first attempt — a lightweight, do-it-all trail and street machine built on the same simple, tor­quey, economical philosophy that made Honda's small-displacement singles into some of the best-selling motorcycles of the era.

Power comes from a 124cc SOHC single-cylinder engine, air-cooled with a 2-piece cylinder head, delivering a claimed 12.5-13 hp at around 9,400-10,000 rpm through a 5-speed transmission with chain final drive. Top speed sits around 70 mph — genuinely capable for a lightweight trail bike of this era. The 1977 model dropped the tachometer that had been fitted on earlier XL125s, simplifying the cockpit, and switched to an upswept exhaust routing for improved ground clearance on rougher terrain.

Suspension and chassis were tuned for genuine dual-purpose use: a leading-axle front fork and rear lay-down shocks delivered ample travel for trail riding, while universal-tread tires kept the bike stable on pavement as well as dirt. Street-legal equipment came standard, including flex-mounted turn signals, sizeable tail and headlights, mirrors, and a reasonably generous fuel tank for a bike this size. Front and rear wheels ran 2.75-21 and 3.50-18 tires respectively, with expanding-shoe drum brakes front and rear. Dry weight comes in around 235 lbs.
