X-ADV 750 (2017-2020): The Genre-Bending Original, Before the First Major Update
When Honda launched the X-ADV in 2017, it created a genuinely new category almost by accident — part adventure bike, part maxi-scooter, built around the idea that DCT automatic convenience and real off-road capability didn't have to be mutually exclusive. This original run, running through 2020 before the significant 2021 revision, established the formula that's since sold over 76,000 units worldwide.
Power comes from the 745cc parallel-twin shared with the NC750X, delivering a claimed 54-58 hp and around 50 lb-ft of torque, run through Honda's DCT dual-clutch automatic transmission with Walk, Sport, and Tour riding modes — genuinely unusual hardware for a bike marketed on off-road capability, since automatic transmissions had historically stayed confined to street-focused scooters. A 41mm telescopic front fork, linked ABS, and electronically adjustable rear preload gave the chassis real substance beyond its scooter-adjacent looks.
The X-ADV's signature trait throughout this generation was its identity crisis by design: 16-inch front and 15-inch rear wheels (larger than a typical scooter, smaller than a true adventure bike) paired with genuine off-road capability that surprised riders expecting a glorified commuter. A generous 21.3-litre under-seat storage compartment, standard smart-key functionality, and a step-through frame layout kept the practical, easy-access appeal that scooter riders expect, while the upright riding position, long-travel suspension, and DCT's Gravel-adjacent tuning gave it genuine light off-road manners few scooters could match. Multiple riding modes and Honda Selectable Torque Control were available depending on model year and market, with the platform building a reputation as a genuinely capable, comfortable all-rounder for mixed commuting and weekend adventure riding. This original run's success set up the more substantial 2021 update, which added 4 hp, Euro5 compliance, and a dedicated Gravel riding mode.
