FourTrax Foreman TRX450 S/ES/FM/FE (1998-2004): Honda's Genuine Electric-Shift Breakthrough
Honda's own ATV model history timeline calls out exactly what made this launch significant: "Honda's largest and most powerful ATV arrives in two versions: the manual-shift Foreman S and the electric-shift Foreman ES. Introduced in a market increasingly drawn to competitors with automatic transmissions, the ES is named the ATV of the Year by ATV Magazine." Honda's genuine innovation here was the Electric Shift Program (ESP) — a system delivering "the convenience of an automatic transmission with the durability and engine braking of a conventional transmission," letting riders shift up or down at the push of a button rather than choosing between a manual clutch or a genuine automatic that sacrificed real engine braking.
Power comes from a 433cc air-cooled OHV single-cylinder engine, longitudinally mounted specifically to help reduce overall weight and enable direct shaft-drive alignment. Off-Roading Pro's own review of the platform's real-world reputation is genuinely enthusiastic: "it is even considered by some enthusiasts to perform a lot better than a Yamaha Grizzly and a Polaris Sportsman," with the Foreman 450 seeing genuine service "from pig farms to banana plantations to golf courses," proving reliable "over rough roads, sandhills, wooded trails, muddy fields, and water crossings."
Honda's own 2004 factory specifications confirm the model naming convention across this range: the TRX450FE designation applies to the ESP-equipped electric-shift variant, while the TRX450FM covers the manual-shift version — both running the identical 433cc engine and both equipped with TraxLok, Honda's switch-operated 2WD/4WD system, paired with a torque-sensing front differential for genuine traction on demand. The earlier "S" and "ES" designations used at the 1998 launch correspond to this same manual/electric-shift split before Honda's naming convention shifted to the FM/FE designation later in the production run. Off-Roading Pro's own buying advice for used examples flags genuine inspection points worth checking: the left rear wheel, rear brakes, shifting mechanism, and speedometer function, with particular caution recommended around 1999 models specifically, since owners have reported that model year carrying more common issues than surrounding years. This platform ran through 2004 before Honda's comprehensively redesigned 2005 Foreman arrived with a larger 475cc engine in an all-new frame.
This factory service manual covers the procedures, torque specs, and diagrams needed to keep a 1998-2004 TRX450 S/ES/FM/FE FourTrax Foreman running the way it was built to.
